RCR had a chance to check out Project X, starring newcomers Thomas Mann, Oliver Cooper, and Jonathan Daniel Brown. The film also has a familiar face — Alexis Knapp — aka the mother of Ryan Phillippe’s most recent child!
Project X is a mockumentary style film about a group of high school kids who want to throw a party that will put them on the map. Although things start out a little rowdy, eventually it gets so out of hand that the police have to send in a SWAT team.
The film starts with a vibe that feels like “the making of Superbad,” shot entirely to look like footage from a friend shooting a video and various camera phones. The effect is somewhat off-putting at the beginning but once you get used to it, it definitely makes the film feel interesting and original. The script was unexpectedly funny however it seemed to eventually fall into the rut of trying too hard to become epic. Every party film wants to become the next Hangover or the next Superbad, however this story hits a point at which the events become a little too outrageous and it feels less real.
Overall, the soundtrack is amazing and the movie is a lot of fun though a little too crazy at times. We definitely recommend checking it out if you’re looking for some laughs — and of course, we’ll have the full scoop Monday night on RCR at 10 pm (z89online.com)!
Check out the trailer above and let us know if you plan to see Project X, in theaters March 2! Let us know your thoughts in the comments or on twitter!
